We offer microchip implantation and registration at the practice.
What is a microchip?
A microchip is a small electronic device, about the size of a grain of rice. Each microchip has a unique number within it that can be scanned and recorded in a central database, along with an owner’s contact details. If your pet was lost then found, a vet or dog warden can scan their microchip and retrieve your contact details from the central database, allowing you to be reunited with your pet quickly and easily.
How is a microchip inserted?
The microchip is placed using a specially designed implanter, underneath the skin between your pet’s shoulder blades. This should be no more painful than a vaccination injection. We can place a microchip at the same time as a vaccination or other appointment. An anaesthetic is not required, however sometimes we can offer to microchip your pet whilst it is in with us under anaesthetic for another procedure eg neutering.
Is it a legal requirement for my pet to be microchipped?
In Wales it is now a legal requirement that all dogs are microchipped by 8 weeks of age, and the owner’s details must be registered with a central database. If a dog is found not to have a microchip, or if an owner’s current details are not registered with the database, there is the possibility of a £500 fine.
There is no legal requirement for cats to be microchipped, but we highly recommend microchipping of all cats. Microchipping provides a permanent way of identifying your cat, whereas collars can be easily lost and can even cause serious injuries.
How do I update my details at the central database?
You will need to update your details each time your phone number, postal address or email address change. To do this, you will need to contact your central database. The most commonly used databases are Identibase and Petlog. If you’re not sure which database your pet’s chip is registered with, simply contact either of these companies and they can point you in the right direction.
Does my dog still need to wear a collar and tag?
Yes. It is still a legal requirement for pet dogs to wear a collar and tag that states their owner’s name and address, whenever they are in a public place.
